Mason homes, from the roof down
Mason is a Warren County city that grew from a small town into a major suburb in a single generation, and the housing reflects that. Outside a few older streets near downtown it is 1990s, 2000s and 2010s subdivision construction: two-story and larger homes with brick or stone fronts, vinyl sides, steep pitched roofs with multiple gables, on flat to gently rolling ground that was farmland not long ago. Kings Island sits at the city's edge, and the trees in most neighborhoods are still young.
Production homes at twenty to thirty years old fail on schedule and together. Roofs: builder shingles, often with ice-and-water membrane only to the code minimum and ventilation that was never balanced, so the north slopes age early even without shade. Siding: vinyl that has chalked and grown brittle on the south and west walls, and the brick-to-vinyl transition at the front corners leaking behind the J-channel. Windows: builder-grade double-hungs with failed seals fogging between the panes. Open lots put the full spring wind on tall rooflines, so lifted shingles and missing ridge caps are a routine spring call across the city.
Mason has its own building department, and the permit is pulled there before the crew is booked.
